Staffan Linzatti - View From The Collapsing Centre

  • Like much of Staffan Linzatti's work, View From The Collapsing Centre, his first appearance on Dutch label Balans, is focused on fast-paced, sci-fi techno. It'll probably bring to mind Jeff Mills (he's also apparently counted among the record's supporters). Overall it's a fine addition to both the artist and label's catalog but, for me, it starts on a bum note. "Opening," whose string and synth crescendos at least set the mood well, is one of those tracks where the kick feels like it's in the wrong place. Some might like the effect, but I find myself skipping past it to "The Contraption," where a simple but sturdy drum pattern propels an alluring blend of bleeps and spaced-out synth tones. Two similarly crisp and functional tracks make up the EP's second half. The title track ramps up the intensity with sheets of noise and cinematic string stabs, while "Control" sticks to a slightly faster yet more restrained groove, one embellished with futuristic sound effects that glide smoothly in and out of focus.
