- Having opened in March, Club kyo is a newcomer to Singapore's fickle electronic music landscape, but with past guests such as Kirk Degiorgio, Robert Babicz, Recondite and Function, the basement venue has already asserted itself as a serious contender. Francois K was the club's biggest booking yet, and one that's been a long time coming. The legendary Body & Soul resident was brought in to launch Liberation, a Sunday afternoon party series. While Sunday is a staple party option in other parts of the world, Singapore has yet to really embrace the concept. But perhaps all this is to change.
Among the day's cast of local DJs, a highlight was Jonathan Yeo. An ex-Zouk resident now based in Bali, he added old school credibility to the early stages of the party with classics like A Guy Called Gerald's "Voodoo Ray." Following him was another ex-Zouk resident, Brendon P, a walking musical encyclopedia who keeps the sounds of Paradise Garage, Funhouse and Dancetaria close to his heart. Songs like Geraldine Hunt's "Can't Fake The Feeling," Tony Watson's "Passages" and Starguard's "Wear It Out" pumped through the house's EAW soundsystem.
As for the man of the night? Francois K rolled out nothing short of an inspirational set, first testing waters with newish favourites such as Daphni's "Ye Ye" and Akabu's "Everybody Wants Something" before letting it all go with his trademark genre-bending sorcery—cutting and crossing through music history, from funk to hip-hop, breaks and, for the finale, drum & bass. Deftly cruising the Bozak isolators for extra dynamics, he gave this tiny island its much-needed release.
