Anthony Parasole - Off The Grid

  • New York DJ, producer and The Corner label boss Anthony Parasole goes Off The Grid with this three-track EP on his friend Marcel Dettmann's imprint. It's easy to see how Parasole's tracks fit in with those of Dettmann and company. Led by upfront kicks and bristling with cymbals, hi-hats and handclaps, this record is, for the most part, ready to work over dance floors. The title track builds steadily across seven and a half minutes, its filtered snippets of sound skittering up and down while a buzzsaw riff slices into the middle section. "My Diary" sees Parasole top off a more restrained groove with a long, skipping semi-melody, but the whole thing feels a bit too timid, and for me it's the record's least impressive track. Fortunately, the wonderfully righteous jack of "Transform" follows. Parasole's percussive dexterity is in full effect, highlighted by sixteenth-note rushes, while a short, hollowed-out bass riff takes over down low, finishing a release that should lead to even more eyes (and ears) being trained on the NYC artist.
