Photonz present Negentropy

  • Releasing on their own label, One Eyed Jacks, for the first time in two years, Photonz return with some unadulterated dance floor syncopations. Negentropy, say Marco Rodrigues and Miguel Evaristo, is a project that adopts a "more evident influence of traditional dub techniques." That manifests itself as three primal club cuts, which also channel early techno, African and Latin rhythms, and, intentionally or not, grime and UK bass. "Nocturne Bird" rattles along like a runaway express train, a nervy samba rhythm buttressed by a raw arpeggiated synth line and a window-shaking bass blast. The spirit of Detroit techno's founding fathers filters through "Sphinx." Scuttling snares and glowering bass dominate early on, but in the middle of a reflective moment, a grand swell and metallic stabs alter its texture into something far angrier. Finally, the elegant, percussive shakedown of "Areia Branca Avalon" splices mournful violin to machine-gun bursts of industrial clanks. It's stripped-down club ordnance of some note.
