Nimbus Quartet - Later Lover

  • Active for a short period in 1995, Nimbus Quartet was the production alias of Dave Stevens and Minneapolis legend Woody Mcbride. Making the kind of groove-centric club music that was popular at the time, the pair only managed two EPs on Sounds. before disbanding. So strong was their output, however, that Paris label Lazare Hoche Records have decided to breathe a new lease of life into their music, re-releasing three Nimbus Quartet originals. Lifted from Fo' On Da Flo', "Later Lover" and "Mouch Touch" are near-perfect examples of smooth, punchy deep house. The former sets the EP off at a stride, laying jazzy licks over colossal kicks and animated snares. It's the bassline that steals the show, though, leading the charge with composed confidence. The latter is more striking still, centring sharp claps, smokey synths and delicate melodies on another beautifully cascading bassline. "Your House Is Yours Parts II&III Simultaneously" (taken from Chunkafunk) finishes the release on an upbeat note. Weighing in just shy of 12 minutes, the record's sprightly, endearing tones give it a fresh and timeless feel. Expertly fusing musicality with dance floor purpose, Later Lover is a must-have re-release.
