Jerome LOL - Deleted / Fool

  • Having officially called time on LOL Boys—Jerome Potter and Markus Garcia's deep house-leaning, long-distance recording project—the former strikes out on his own with a clutch of plaintive electro love songs. Potter, from Los Angeles, and Garcia, from Montreal, used to record by swapping ideas online, often dishing them up with quirky videos as accompaniment, but the removal of a sounding board doesn't seem to have dimmed Potter's knack for nagging hooks and soulful vibes. "Deleted," the first of two tracks with vocalist Sara Z, marries garagey beats with doleful synth melodies in a style that isn't far removed from Disclosure's urban/house hybrid. Fairground organs, drum rolls and brushed snares underpin the gentle jazz-pop of "Always," a track with plenty of crossover potential, before Potter toughens things up with "Fool." The first of two tracks with Angelina Lucero, it reverberates to a pile-driving kick drum and grandfather clock percussion, heavily sweetened by the vocodered vocals. Potter's final trick is the fuzzy, lo-fi electronica of "True," which is flavoured with hints of Gold Panda and James Holden. If you're being picky, the EP could do with an instrumental or a male vocal, just for variety's sake. But, despite being shorn of his old collaborator, Jerome LOL is still doing rather nicely.
