Lorca - Forgive Me Love / Naoko

  • There's a melancholic aroma in Lorca's music that serves the Brighton producer well on his debut for Ben Westbeech's Naked Naked. These tracks would fit snugly into most deep house sets, but they have subtleties that work in a home-listening environment, too. The key elements of "Forgive Me Love"—bouncy snares, alarm bells and ravey piano stabs—may read like the recipe for dance floor lunacy, but they're handled with care rather than unleashed like attack dogs. It's UK garage-flavored house that gently rolls rather than frenziedly bounces. "Naoko" has an even stronger waft of the past. Lorca wraps a wandering, reedy synth motif and quaking bass groans around a lo-fi breakbeat. Like "Forgive Me Love," the softly-softly approach adds intrigue to an understated, enigmatic little EP.
