Korova - Horizontally

  • Dark, no-bullshit techno has been the name of the game for Korova since the Italian duo first appeared on the production front with two records released last year (though their collaboration actually began in 2008). The duo's latest, Horizontally, comes through their own Shades label, and their two original cuts are primed for peak-time. The title track is a little more atmospheric and restrained, its primary element a distorted, offbeat bassline that weaves its way upward through the mix, while "Transversally" is upfront and frenetic, with a buzzing acidic lead. Skirt's remix of "Horizontally" is one of her more straightforward efforts. Slowing down and spacing out at 120 BPM, she takes a clatter of swung cymbals and hi-hats from the original and adds her distinctive otherworldly touch through some siren-like synth tones. Spanish duo NX1 take on "Transversally," slightly reconfiguring Korova's lead and working it into their own dynamic, relentlessly percussive attack. For me, Skirt's is the standout, but all four tracks are strong.
