Adultrock - Chants

  • Irish producer Gav Elsted has a background in alt-rock (as opposed to Adultrock) but there's little evidence of that on this EP of hazy house and gauzy electronica. He does, however, have a way of cleaving out melody with trippy analogue synths. It's probably more accurate to say that Adultrock's music has something of chillwave's fluffiness applied to a house template. "Chants" stomps along pleasantly enough for the first few minutes, but really takes off with the introduction of a heavy swell of blissed-out keys. It's a similar story with "Goldwave," with Elsted balancing a trancey throb with an ethereal, melodic fug, before the tempo is reduced on the robo-funk jam "In The Shade." Optimo's JG Wilkes remixes "Chants" in his Naum Gabo guise. He leaves the feel of the original's percussive bounce and chatter, trimming any excess fat before overlaying an echo-drenched Mellotron. Ron Morelli then teams up with Svengalisghost as Ghost 202 to unleash some discordant but controlled noise, a piece of industrial sound design with the power to induce night terrors. As a contrast to the airy original, it couldn't be more stark.
