Panthera Krause - Laika

  • Panthera Krause's brand of house music might be moody, but it's never menacing. "Through My Mind," the opening track here, sets its sights on genteel dance floors. There's a mournful, elegiac quality to it, especially when it breaks down into strands of elongated acid, accompanied by the pitter-patter of pillowy pads. Breathy, indistinct vocals act as a further salve on this slice of sad house. Both "Isla" and its dub version also cater for the more discerning house consumer; it's an intense shuffle with beats that crackle and pop like they've been thrown into hot oil. "If" offers something quite different. It begins as a raw, percussive workout, live drums and what sounds like a kid let loose on the pots and pans, before giving way to some jabbering analogue phrases. On "Dubček" quaking bass keys and disco signifiers combine at a rattling pace, before the brief, beatless "Outro" takes the haunting synth motif from "Isla" and rolls it in a muddy bath of distortion. It closes an EP where subtlety and sensitivity reign supreme.
