  • Few house labels get to celebrate 20 years in the business, but Ralph Lawson's 2020 Vision reaches the landmark confidently this summer. Formed in the '90s on a farm holding outside Leeds, the imprint has released a staggering 200-plus releases up to now. It'd be acceptable to simply release a retrospective from the vaults, but gathering new material to signpost to 2020's future was always Lawson's plan, teaming its core artists alongside a few from his anniversary wishlist. The result is a comprehensive cross-section of what makes 2020 tick. The first disc is a DJ mix, opening with Colors In Waves' remix of "Praise," the 2007 gem by Art Of Tones. This is swiftly followed by PBR Streetgang's rework of Soldiers Of Twilight's "Believe," a well-constructed update of the 2001 label classic. Mathew Herbert's echoing mix of Maya Jane Coles' "Senseless" is a snug fit, the production skills of two generations meeting vibrantly. Pezzner's take on 2020 Soundsystem's own "I Don't Know" oozes class as well. But the mix's strength mostly lies in the newer clutch of artists, from Huxley's bumping "Body Talk" and Citizen's expansive "Where Is Love Now" to Eats Everything's muscular "Adam." Lawson doesn't throw any curveballs, but it's an engaging, involving snapshot of the label that mines a seam of homegrown talent. The second two discs are the DJ's pot of gold, with unmixed versions of everything from disc one plus a clutch of exclusives. The new tracks are no slouches either: Kalabrese's woozy "Muchtoosmall," Tom Trago's driving mix of Wulf n Bear's "Raptures Of The Deep" and Psychemagik's booming cut of Debukas' "Some Days" all stand out. It's also fitting that Paul Woolford's "Erotic Discourse" makes the cut, here with Dense & Pika's choppy remix, to remind listeners of one of the label's most iconic tracks. The three-disc collection shows what 2020 Vision does best. It's no groundbreaking selection, but it won't disappoint either.
