Josh Humphris - Moses Jam

  • In an age where record labels are springing up two-a-penny, those open-minded to genre tend to fare best. New London imprint Indigo Soul claims to be just that, dedicated to "encouraging creative spirit across varying musical backgrounds." Their inaugural release also marks the debut of Brighton-based artist Josh Humphris, who turns out two gentle cuts of Flying Lotus-inspired electronica. The EP opens with the faint hiss of machinery, immediately giving off a warm, organic vibe. Humphris adds beatboxed snares, dewy synths and a lolloping beat, complemented by a carousel of tweets, shimmers and muffled sighs. All spliced together, it's beautifully soothing. At five and a half minutes, "Infinity Loop" is double the length though not quite as engaging. That said, its palette is still pleasing on the ear, a tumbling brook of shrill ripples, spectral shivers and what can only be described as an accordion melting. Humphris clearly has a knack for sound design—it'll be interesting to see where he takes it next.
