Merachka - UnderGroov Remix EP

  • The problem with anonymous producers is that you can't cross-reference their new stuff with previously released material. But such is the grand but understated sweep performed by Merachka on his debut release for Terrence Parker's Intangible, you wouldn't be surprised to learn that he/she had a similar dance floor provenance to Parker, a Detroit house stalwart. Parker's remix of "Undergroov" begins with a slither of vocal, artfully deployed as a secondary percussive element to the standard kicks and hi-hats. From there it increases the pace gradually, ending up as a peak-time belter, albeit with an emotional tinge. Set against Parker's production polish, Merachka's original, with its swampy bass, sounds muddy in comparison, but added vignettes—particularly a brief appearance of some 8-bit blips—hint at a producer looking to push the envelope. A further two productions finds Merachka toughening up his/her act, particularly on the brutal, classic techno of "A Minimal Break Down," which trades in elephantine beats, a juddering synth line and sonar blips. "Zniper" offers something different again, with a memorable cowbell signature sprayed across its entire length with machine-gun rapidity. Merachka won't be able to stay in the shadows too long on this evidence.
