Brendon Moeller - Passage To Obscurity

  • After launching earlier this year with some burly beats from label head Vohkinne, Atrophic Society returns with a 12-inch from Brendon Moeller, whose once-silky dub techno has started to grow a steely coat. Passage To Obscurity picks up where his last Echologist album, Storming Heaven, left off. It taps into the best of both worlds: immersive atmospherics with all the physical power of a peak-time 12-inch. "Passage To Obscurity" stretches out over eight minutes, carving out a deep valley of reverb where the drums float Sandwell District-style, and foghorn-like chords drift on the breeze. It's both steady and dynamic, slowly turning funkier until it pulls itself apart over a lengthy outro. Vohkinne's remix pulls those loose bits together, nailing it all down with a swampy kick drum and suppressing the groaning chords until they're more of an ominous fog floating in the background. The house-inflected "Contents Under Pressure" rounds off the EP with a bit of syncopation, showing some big-room allegiances with its chugging chords and well-placed handclaps. Turning frantic in a spray of high-pitched frequencies, it's as abrasive and raw as anything Moeller has released in a long time.
