Wolfey - Habit EP

  • We last heard from Vancouver's Alexander Belkin, AKA Wolfey, almost exactly a year ago, when he released a self-titled EP on Hybridity. There, Belkin explored swooning, meditative house; Habit is similar, although the tracks were recorded on hardware in one continuous take, giving the EP some pleasingly ragged edges that offset all the mesmeric prettiness. "It's Not The Name" is an unassuming opener, its jazzy little synth spirals being joined by steady percussion and a gravelly spoken-word backdrop. The middle three tracks are by far the release's most floor-ready. Project Pablo guests on "Time Constraints," whose monolithic bass, punchy drums and ravey synths put it at the top of this pack of club weapons. There's plenty of DJ-tool appeal in the stripped-back "Pressure" due to the rawness of its bass and percussion spine, while the title track pulls a similar trick to "Time Constraints," minus the spaceship-summoning pads. "Bittersweet" makes for a standout closer, its gorgeous, endlessly repeating synth loop evoking happy memories of turn-of-the-century Burger/Ink tracks, as cushioned drums and manic hats pepper the background.
