Fraxinus - All Ends

  • Less active than fellow co-founders Sudanim, Miss Modular and CYPHR, Her Records' Fraxinus seems to work best to a brief. His most visible effort has been a loving "Reconstruct" of Dizzee's "Wheel," in which the original was rebuilt from scratch and then twisted into a series of new forms. A trip to his SoundCloud, meanwhile, shows an edit of Fiedel's uncannily Her-like "Doors To Manual" and a facetious "ha" track riffing on the Rinse FM ident. As befits a white label, the producer's latest is pretty no-frills for Her, occupying the opposite end of the label's spectrum from CYPHR's expansive Ekleipsis, and lacking the rich inventiveness of Sudanim at his best. If there's one thing that sets it apart, it's Fraxinus' continued commitment to recycling. "All Ends" is a retooling of Baltimore club veteran DJ Diamond K's "Hey You Knuckle Heads," in which vocalist Big Ria shouts out the city's neighbourhoods over a simple rolling kick. Fraxinus leaves the original pretty much intact but bolts a few layers of reinforced-steel onto its exterior. A thunderous 4/4, assorted metallic parts and plenty of gunshots lend the thing a barrelling, almost technoid sense of momentum. The "Off Ends" version plays faster and looser with its source. Its pummeling syncopations are more akin to the fiendish rhythmic tricks pulled off by Fraxinus's Her cohorts, but the result feels a bit heavy on its feet, as if all that metal is weighing it down.
