Portishead – Roads (Sultan & Tonedepth mix)

  • White Label. Tribal Progressive at it’s finest! Or maybe I should just say Trip-Hop? Whatever the case my be, this remix of Portishead’s classic can’t be missed by anyone that touches tribal, progressive, dub, ambient, or simply electronic music. I personally don’t know too much about Sultan & Tonedepth other than Sultan’s a good DJ from what I’ve heard. And if his mixes are anything like this track, I need to find some of his mixes at my local music store. Since this release is a whitelabel and the song is pretty old, it’s highly likely that this is an unofficial release. The track is basically the exact same as the original, but it has been beefed up to give it a more wicked tribal feel. The sounds have been amped and the bass and snare has been raised to give it that hypnotic rush. Only a few lines from Beth Gibbons are kept as in a minimal breakdown that works just right in keeping the groove going. The element of slow, elastic beats over a smooth dark atmosphere just gives me chills when I listen to this track. Not too much to say since there wasn’t much that Sultan & Tonedepth added, except edit the cub into a monster that everyone can dig their claws into.
