Pierre Ravan & Safar – Divine Energy

  • Persian duo Pierre Ravan and Safar are both talented producers who have injected their Middle Eastern influences into their music. They have remixed and produced for a long time now and are currently working on an album under EMI/Virgin. ‘Divine Energy’ comes packed with a remix from the boys themselves while the extra cuts come courtesy of Filterheadz and Laurent Wolf. The Rulers of the Deep mix starts off with a solid house groove, alongside Middle Eastern percussion and rasping high hats. The sounds of different metallic objects being struck really add some depth as it sets up the entry of the low, chanting, almost moaning, vocal as its sleeps into a gracious breakdown. The sustained vocal filters over beautifully while smooth synth chords float the mix back into the rhythm. The groove is ever present and will surely move the most stubborn of dancer’s feet. Upping the pace, we go to the Filterheads remix, who lay down some pure driving beats in a techno-like production. The mix stays minimal with rolling percussion and faded vocals. The breakdown keeps the track speed with little sounds ticking over in the back while a dirty, distorted synth hook takes control and is shortly accompanied by the full driving beat. Another breakdown drops in with layered and filtered strings along with subtle effects and moaning sounds. A nice interpretation of the original and will suit people with more minimal techno tastes. Laurent Wolf puts in a stormer remix as its mellow break-beat start relaxes before a big beat is dropped suddenly as the track takes off. Quirky drums and background vocals play a small role as the beat bounces about with mellow electro hooks that are given the effects treatment. An aggressive breakdown in the middle plays out with sharp, striking percussion which stays with the track as it reaches the business end of the mix. This mix is very hard to classify as it reaches into many bags and spills the beans. Bits of house, funk, techno and whatever else. Very impressive. The Middle Eastern influence is apparent throughout these mixes but don’t be fooled, all mixes will serve well in different environments with their great production. Laurent’s remix is my pick of this pack. A very diverse remix.
