Guido - Moment

  • Even as Bristol's scene has evolved around him, Guy Middleton's music hasn't changed all that much. In 2015, Guido songs have all the same hallmarks they did in 2009: bright spacious arrangements, chintzy string samples and other MIDI morsels, all arranged into hummable melodies. That formula made his 2009 album Anidea a dubstep classic, but the 2013 follow-up, Moods Of Future Joy, felt like it was treading water. One of that record's strong points, however, was vocalist Emma-Lou, a singer who fit perfectly with Middleton's slick production style. She returns on "Moment," the first Guido release since Moods, and—at least in the case of one version—it's the best thing he's done for some time. "Moment" feels like a throwback to Anidea in the best way possible. Ambling by on a jazzy drum track, everything pops with a vibrant presence and colour, from the simple piano that holds up the verses to the bursts of strings that mark the chorus. It's the kind of thing that could get played on the radio in a parallel universe. The "Grimey" version roughs it for the club, though Middleton sounds less comfortable here, chopping up the vocal over a stabbing chord refrain that mistakes the intricate attack of grime for blunt aggression. With instrumentals of each version included to pad the package, Moment feels light, but it includes a strong track from producer who still has the spark that made his classic work so memorable.
