Laguna Ladies - Egyptian Bag EP

  • In the five years it's been running, Mr. Tophat's Junk Yard Connections has largely highlighted a new generation of Swedish producers. Next in the spotlight are Stockholm duo Laguna Ladies, who make their debut with Egyptian Bag. Featuring remixes from Studio Barnhus's Baba Stiltz and deep house don Moomin, the 12-inch only has one original cut, which, when you hear it, should leave you hungry for more. The title track is centred on a spoken sample, a young boy repeating the line: "Just bought an Egyptian bag." Summery pads and a plump acid line support his playful tone, before coiled 303s and machine-gun snares join the fray for a punchy finish. Bubbly, funky and fun, it's the kind of track that will turn heads on most dance floors. Listen to Baba Stiltz's remix straight afterwards and you might think there's been a mistake, so wildly different is his version. It's a weird but winning move, with the young Swede presenting a slice of low-key, loopy techno. Another curveball rounds out this impressive package, as Moomin lays classic house keys and bits of the original vocal over downtempo, half-stepping drums.
