Israel Vines - WWKD

  • Interdimensional Transmissions' new Eye Teeth offshoot makes a great start with the WWKD EP from Israel Vines. A well-regarded figure in the US techno underground, Vines' output has been slow but strong. (Just one example is his killer remix of Erika's "Gardeners," released on IT in late 2013.) WWKD begins with the blistering broken-beat title track. It's a forceful production geared for peak-time use, thanks to a menacing bassline and relentless, piston-like percussion, but it's expansively arranged and stuffed with details. With a skittish melody surfacing in the middle, the track is probably best when given some time to breathe in the mix. "Relapse," a sprawling 4/4 cut, is similarly nuanced but more restrained. It's better as a layering tool, with a prickly treble and reverb-drenched chords lower down. Lastly there's "Tone Approach 1," four tense minutes of industrial drones and sky-on-fire ambience that tops off an excellent EP, and one that instantly marks Eye Teeth as a label to watch.
