Various Artists - Various Cuts #1

  • ClekClekBoom's first release of 2015 is a consolidation of the sound by which the label, profiled by RA about a year ago, has defined itself: raw, versatile house and techno that absorbs a little bit of everything without getting caught up in one particular style. Various Cuts #1 satisfyingly captures a narrower slice of its influences. "8 Hours From Nation," by French Fries and NSDOS, is an unusually tranquil piece given the previous work of the artists involved. A snare lightly beats the track's monotone synth, which at first is pretty much all you can discern. Its other percussive bits cluster together as if trying to hide. Aleqs Notal's "Mare IMB," another minimal composition, employs a skeletal beat to shoulder the bass stabs, ambient notes, metallic claps and satellite bleeps, all of which drift in Notal's pleasant fug. Things are a little less restrained on "Cause Of Action," whose rubbery bassline bumps up against a white noise hiss and ambient notes that billow like a veil by an open window, but the 303-laced "Frostbite," from Amsterdam producer Barbara Ford, makes the boldest move for the dance floor while retaining the EP's simplicity.
