Tokyo Prose - Dawn Chorus EP

  • Tokyo Prose, real name Sam Reed, makes drum & bass that has more in common with new age music than anything on Samurai. Although Calibre often comes up when talking about Reed's music, he's been steadily perfecting his own brand of plush drum & bass over a steady stream of releases. Dawn Chorus is one of the most characteristic examples, with the producer stripping down his music and polishing the parts that remain. The title track illustrates Reed's growth: the soft vocals and beautiful strings share the stage with the drums rather than decorate them. The extra sounds that he throws in are immaculate, like the beautiful metallic textures on "Vanishing Point." That half-time stunner is the EP's major highlight. It sounds like it's made from thousands of glimmering Swarovski crystals. "Windtalker" is another solid effort, one with big synth tones and orchestral elements. Only "Intimacy" falters, hearkening back to the cheesier moments of Presence with a heavy-handed sample ("Think about the music / Think about the way it's making you feel") that doesn't match the track's delicate emotion. It's one blemish on an otherwise strong EP, which finds Reed continuing to hone his craft.
