dgoHn - All The Fuckin' As

  • "Drumfunk," a micro-genre of drum & bass christened by Paradox over a decade ago, is a sort of cousin of breakcore. Both took inspiration from golden-era jungle, intensifying its logic to create wild new forms. But if breakcore saw in jungle the cheap thrill of punk, then drumfunk regards it as jazz. Veterans like Paradox and Fanu peddle a cool, cerebral kind of drum & bass, in which meticulously chopped breakbeats seem to be rattling out a never-ending solo. The style has never really gone away, and this new EP from dgoHn, co-creator of 2010's Some Shit Saaink LP on Rephlex, suggests that he hasn't lost his appetite for Amens. "All The Fuckin' As" is a prime example of the form. The atmospherics are sparse and subdued, leaving ample space for the breakbeats, which don't lose an iota of their woody clarity in spite of paradiddling at 200 miles-per-hour. When the track flares up circa two and a half minutes, it's enough to take your eyebrows off. "Untitled Pigdog"'s Amen rinse-out is even more upfront, and the chords behind it more dreamy, accentuating drumfunk's odd mix of post-club zone-out and percussive frenzy. Finally, a remix by label regular Scrase takes the A-side into glitchy breakcore; it sounds like two remixes' worth of material are locked in a bitter fight to the death. In this instance, jungle's manic energy sounds better when kept firmly under thumb.
