Sector Y - Sector Y

  • There's not much info on Sector Y, save for a few machine tests on SoundCloud. This jam-based way of producing is at the core of Montreal label Booma Collective, who were responsible for the producer's first release, a track on last year's The Furnace Series compilation. Where most of the compilation explored a foggy headspace, Sector Y's raw beat work plowed straight onto the dance floor. On his self-titled debut EP, the producer further develops that loud personality. Sector Y's A-side is refreshingly wild. After a dreamy intro, "Hit Control" reveals itself as a surging pumper with a bassline in overdrive. "Road To World Cup" is the weirdest of the bunch, with an off-kilter sense of rhythm that—banging as it is—barely hangs together. The B-side is slightly more straight. "Sentient" is a slow burner with a mutant kind of atmosphere, but its loop, nasty as it is, can grow tiring. On "Germs," Sector Y tones things down with a dusty, low-swung house jam. It's a cut fitting of New York lo-fi labels, but the A-side's rhythmic chaos shows a more distinct energy.
