  • This year's Vibes was held at Wharf 3, Miller's Point, due to Council difficulties at Bondi Beach. This turned to be yet another blow to the Waverley Council's decision making as Vibes was a success. The crowd benefited from the best Sydney Harbour scenery. Boats lined up to enjoy some of the afternoon festivities. With the crowd being unfashionably late, the crew of the main stage were still experiencing sound difficulties two hours into playing their warm up set. Fashion was what can only be described as a bad 80's revival. Future suggested research can best be conducted by watching Madonna in Desperately Seeking Susan before rushing to a clothing chain store. The regular punters stood out as looking normal. The pattern of the day was counting how many women wore ankle length, white cotton, flared at the hip skirts. Tassle earings were a necessity as where the signature Kangol hat. The Merivale chain brought a supermodel contingent to the bar staffing which was friendly to the eyes and made the exceptionally long queuing a little more pleasurable. The highlight being when the t-shirt uniforms became drenched in beer and turned into a different display alltogether. The Soul/Jazz stage was the most popular of the four, spinning hits from the 60's to late 70's. Good Vibrations took a more eclectic flavour of world beats. Overheating was not a problem with the walk-through outdoor shower, bean bag filled marquee and all day free water from promotional vans-beats paying $4 from the water stations. Norman Jay had a highly energized crowd preceeding Jamiroquai's show. Jay began working the stage with his flair, showmanship and eccentric dance moves slightly after 8:00pm. All the ladies in the room felt as if they were being serenaded and the men danced hard. Jay shared our heat as he sweated from head to toe, it made me wonder what had happened to the collection of electric fans that were kept near the stage. Jay conducted the band members from centre stage as he worked through his ten year history of all the favourites to the present tracks from his new album "Emergency From Planet Earth". The night ended abruptly an hour earlier than advertised which, had something to do with Jamiroquai starting early and patrons made their way home trying to pick their favourite moments of Vibes and sing the odd Jamiroquai song.
