Yunus & Subsky - Step One EP

  • Another new label? It seems as though a new one is surfacing every ten seconds and why not, more and more producers are taking the initiative to widen their vision of electronic music. So why is the first release from this new Turkish label given the title of an EP? Only two tracks and this is called an extended player? And while I’m asking questions, what’s with the titles “Erotic Sumo” and “Airfuzz? Sounds like a title for an adult movie. Hmmm, maybe a misprint, but the new venture by Yunus Guvenen, Subsky, Muzo B, and Barish Turker is already looking bright with the talents that are behind the label. Already flexing their creative muscle, label heads Yunus and Subsky collaborate for the first time and dish out the first step in what hopes to be an everlasting impression of the talent surrounding their homeland. Main-side sees the four-to-the-floor “Erotic Sumo” and immediately, you can hear signature Yunus programming with hints of Subsky’s uplifting melodies. Layers upon layers of pulsation waves developing gradually as it builds for a token climax, while subtle key changes with sparkles of interwoven melodies all wrapped into a wonderful journey. The development of the track takes greater form as the trippy cords swirl around with sounds that seem very much like music from the Middle-Eastern part of the world. After a minimal break, the bassline becomes more evident and begins to take force as the melodies slowly drifts away. Very cool track by both Yunus and Subsky – very spiritual. Flipside sees a broken up breaks track that’ll see more peaktime use than the main-side. Floor-filling block-rockin’-beats encompass “Airfuzz” with drops of sensual melodies on the foreground, while vocals take care of the middle ground. Very minimal synths for the majority of the beginning track that zips away once the breakdown occurs. As the percussion gets fuller, the trims become richer and then everything silences. The breakdown ensures and the magicians begin the real ride. Slow temperamental stabs creep gently and the tapping starts peaking in, soaring by the second, but not to a point where it takes over. When the waves reach ashore, the breaks return smoothly. Two great tracks from the duo, which I hope continues this newfound partnership. Smart marketing to take two of the hottest progressive producers to collaborate for the first release for their new label; it certainly should be checked out if you enjoy deep, emotional pieces of music.
