DJ ICE TITS - Songs About Myrtle Ave.

  • DJ ICE TITS, AKA New York producer Jackson Lee, describes his music as "a slower, druggier re-interpretation of the highly influential Analord records series by Aphex Twin." Though quite the statement, it isn't completely off. Compared to the dubby techno Lee releases under his given name, DJ ICE TITS is more inline with Richard D. James's 11 EPs of analogue, '90s-inspired acid. But Songs About Myrtle Avenue is much more muted than those records, sharing only Analord's 303s and atmospherics. Exploratory as this EP may be, its music grows a bit dull. With sparse arrangements, Lee crafts a quiet crossbreed of acid, ambient and sleepy dub into four dark but different scenes. "DR0052" is a subdued sketch that billows and builds, its cold acid line and delicate melody dancing pirouettes around each other. "DR0022" mirrors Andreas Tilliander's pristine dub and acid, though the codeine-soaked pulse gets too drowsy as it wobbles on and on. "DR0043" is more hypnotic, helped along by murky reverb and trippy chants. The ambient-leaning "Gas Station Part 4" is a panorama of electronics, bringing creature-like gurgles and fizzled hums into soft focus. "Song For RDJ" closes Myrtle with its simplest but perhaps most striking moment: 90 seconds of sad, lapsing chords. Lee is clearly fond of deeper shades, but here he could have delivered them with a little more character.
