  • Well Friday night was Toasted time once again. This bi-monthly event just seems to creep up on you so quickly (and most of the time you need about 2 months to recover from the last anyway!). This was probably the biggest Toasted party of them all. It was once again at The Dendy, but this time the star attraction was a 3 hour back to back set by Phil Smart and Sugar Ray. Also for the first time the Toasted crew made full use of the two rooms that The Dendy has to offer. To start the night off Luke Glenday and Jay Walker played in the second room (in which the bar and the couches are in). They played some fairly lounge type stuff to begin with then moved to some laid back breaks. Unfortunately due to the two rooms it meant that I didn’t get a chance to see everyone, and some people I only got to see for a short time. Cuz was the first guy that really caught my attention. This was his first time playing at Toasted (and as I later found out his first gig anywhere). I have never seen someone work so hard for there first mix. He was by no means lazy and was fiddling with every control he could get his hands on and to great effect. He played minimal tech-house and moved on to some deeper house, finishing off his set with a remix of “Bushes”. Much of Cuz’s set made me think of the Fabric 01 CD by Craig Richards. While Cuz was playing out in the second room, Ajax was playing in the main room. He played mostly a warm up set, starting to get a little chunkier by the end. He is very capable of playing, and on most occasions does play, very diverse styles of music. On this occasion he played a progressive/tech-house set. Next up in the main room was Luke Glenday. He is better every time I see him, and is really beginning to play some top quality breaks. He played at least one track off the Korma & Bones Y4K LP, as well as many other recognizable tracks but whose names I just couldn’t quite remember. Before I knew it, it was time for the star attraction, Sugar Ray and Phil Smart. Mr. Smart turned up a little late so Sugar Ray had to start the night off by himself (which really was no big drama). They played what I expected, an amazing set that mish-mashed their different styles, but still completely complemented each other. Some tracks that I remember: Romanthony- “Never F*ck” Medicine- “Ape Don’t Call Ape” Cass- “Genesis” (Phil & Jamie’s Remix) Ben Burns & Void- “Smooth to Touch” A remix of a Peaches song Needless to say it was a great set, and I am very looking forward to seeing these guys at Love (the party they put on at Easter). To finish off the night once again was Illya. This was probably the hardest I have seen him play, but he still played like his usually funky self. Near the end he played a nice Derrick Carter track. And then it was all over…. This was probably the best Toasted yet, and had the biggest turn out of all their parties. All I can say is god speed to the next 2 months.
