Scratch Perverts

  • Fuzzy always seems to put on the best events and bring out the best international acts as well, and Scratch Perverts at the Metro was no exception. Wikkid, wikkid show. It feels a little wierd to go to the Metro at 9pm especially after being so used to going to Fuzzy Breaks events which usually start at 11 (though the place doesn't even start to warm up until after midnight), however I wanted to make sure I caught the whole show.... ... and get a decent place to sit/stand... and boy oh boy was it easy to get a decent place at 9pm, c'mon Sydney come earlier and show a bit of support for your local DJ's as well - they need it! Nick Toth was first up and this guy definitely knows his reggae, initially starting off his set busting up some reggae tracks on 7" - someone pass me da rizzla... - his set continuing on to resemble a remake of his show at Gatecrasher with MC K-Note, comprising a mix of hip hop tracks both underground and borderline aboveground. Still, not a bad effort from one of Sydney's premier hip hop/funk/breaks DJ's. Kavi-R was next up on the decks, and although I've never seen him play before he definitely didn't disappoint as his mixing skills and track selection brought the breakers to the floor. As I am only adept at pulling off a try-hard version of the running man, I decided to stay seated and let them strut their stuff... Go Girls! It was good to see the women on the same level as the guys at breaking, some were even better! On top of this Kavi-R was pulling out some classic breaks tracks, the titles of which have escaped me at this time... damn! As Kavi-R was finishing up his set, DJ Kuya was preparing for his DJ set. Seeing as he had won a few DMC titles I was prepared for a good DJ set with a lot of scratching involved. Kuya really has some obscure breaks in his collection and he does flaunt them. It's been a long while since I've heard "So Watcha Want?" by Nine. However, Kuya's set did get a little confusing that night and I was hoping he'd drop a few more cuts and scratches into the mix. Maybe I was just anxious to see the Pervs.... DJ Primecuts came out to warm up the decks near the end of Kuya's set, you could hear from the crowd's reaction and Kuya's as well, that this is one of the dudes we came here to see. After the last few bars of Prodigy's Poison played, both Perverts came out and the crowd greeted them with a good Sydney welcome, and with good reason, too. Starting off playing a trick set which did involve a "machine gun" scratch by Primecuts, Gangstarr's Full Clip then busted onto the speakers showing the Perverts good taste in DJ-ing hip hop until.... Britney Spears "Slave 4 U" starts playing on the speakers... argh! I'm no Britney fan, however the Pervs knew what to do with it - play the instrumental and scratch the hell out of it and isn't that what we were all there to see? Of course... scratches and turntable tricks aplenty that night, including one which had Primecuts holding an RCA plug and tapping it with his finger, creating some buzzing sound while he scratched a record using his other hand. As they sped up the beats, they eventually created a drum'n'bass track with Prime still holding the RCA plug and tapping to the beat... awesome! The most incredible trick set during the night had to be the one which involved Tony Vegas (the one with the hat on in case you didn't know) grabbing the needles and dropping them on certain tones on the records creating a drumming pattern, easily setting up Primecuts to scratch on other turntables - another trick set which was sped up to a drum'n'bass beat and getting the crowd all crazy. Speaking of drum'n'bass, they played it a lot that night, reaffirming one fact to the disbelievers out there - Drum'n'bass isn't dead. So all in all a good night was to be had by all who attended and another successful event put on by Fuzzy Breaks. Big thanks must go to Fuzzy and Triple J's Hip Hop show (who keep me from going insane every Friday night) and of course the Sydney hiphop/breaks massive, for making it a successful event. Now I need to prepare for Autumn Breaks with Cut La Roc.
