  • Liverpool's dance music scene has been quietly thriving for some time. MODU:LAR is one of the reasons. They've run parties at venues in the city's docklands since 2014, with bookings that reflect the sound of no-frills, deep-digging DJs such as Nicolas Lutz and Francesco Del Garda alongside a solid team of residents. Now they've launched a vinyl label, MODU:LAR Music. The first release comes from newcomers Uzu, a duo made up of MODU:LAR residents Danny Mc and James Hall. From the stripped-back production to the minimalistic track names, it's a lean, businesslike debut. "The A1" and "The B2," in particular, showcase the classic combination of tight, swinging percussion, punchy bass and spacey pads that mesh in satisfying structures. "The A2" will stand out rather than blend into a mix, with a lively bassline made for drawing energy out of early-morning crowds. The higher tempo and classic "Burning Up" vocal sample give "The B1" a touch of personality, and a distinctly UK flavour. Uzu is an impressive debut from the team behind one of Liverpool's best nights.
