Vicious Cuts Mixed by John Course

  • The bright fluorescent green packaging of this album already was shining through the ripped end of the PostPak padded bag as I tore the rest of the package open and pulled out this latest offering from Melbourne’s own John Course. A quick scan through the track listing shows a promising collection of tunes that had Australia’s dance floors rocking the past summer. With an even mix of local and international artists contributing their work in this album. The album kicks off with Live Elements “Something about You” which has a catchy vocal and good production work setting the pace. Inaya Day’s “Nasty Girl” is given a workover by John Course and mrTimothy which retained the nasty vocals while sounding more club friendly. The same dirty disco vibe continues through Ivan Gough’s “Guiding Light” before Rob Care “Funk Bomb” and its killer sax hook got me tapping my foot to its bubbly beats. What an excellent track! A classy bossa nova twist arrives unexpectedly with Bebel Gilberto’s “River Song” before the warm dubby disco riffs from Soul Avengers “Love You Feel” melts into the mix. Up next, the golden track that had DJs hammering all summer, Midnight Star’s “Midas Touch” with remix credits going to Starskee. The next artiste definitely has got the Midas Touch in 2004; the unstoppable mrTimothy with songbird Inaya Day are featured with their new single “Stand By Me”. Gold! I would be surprised if this single hasn’t already made it to the charts by now. Syke & Sugarstarr’s “Ticket To Ride” is another one of the standout tracks for me in this album, great production work coupled with simple yet intelligent use of that male vocal talking into the mix. Back for another round, mrTimothy with Inaya Day in tow give us yet another track; “Got to Get Up” before the amazing Stonebridge give us their massive hit “Put em High”; a hot record over summer. What better way to finish it off than Cabin Crew’s “Star 2 Fall”. Those who find this tune familiar can recognize it as a cover of that 1988 track “Waiting for a Star to Fall” by Boy Meets Girl. That track was a great masterpiece of 80’s pop music, now given a new breath of life. The overall tone of this album seems to fall into a dirty disco meets rock n roll groove with a sexy house undertone. I find that this album more closely matches John Course’s style than the MOS offerings. This album is definitely recommended for its fresh content and bright packaging which makes it so much easier to find in the dark! Tracklisting 1. Something About You (Original Mix) -Live Element 2.
