Sundance: Easter 2002

  • Sundance on an Easter Monday was always going to be a quality day of music. And with Peace Division and Anthony Pappa on the bill, quality is a foregone conclusion. I’m sure many were on their knees praying for the weather to hold out, and prayers were answered in true Easter spirit as drops of rain where no where to be seen all day. Enough about the weather and on to the music. Peace Division, aka Clive Henry, was the first special guest to bless us with his talents. If you are aware of Peace Division as a production outfit, then you can imagine the quality that Clive can conjure on the decks. House at first with quality roaring baselines such as UBU’s classic “Pixels” then moving on to the tribal side of house which he is so well known for when it comes to his productions. Definitely had those in the terrace moving with approval. The Wok DJ’s (Tim Mcgee & Declan) followed and again played some quality house, playing fine selections such as Chris Lum’s “Bigger Tool” and DJ Bucks magnificent “Don’t Take The Way”. Both Tim and Declan seemed to work well off each other and have plenty of potential as a back to back pairing, Alex Taylor was next and immediately got the crowd into a frenzy. Playing some bigger tunes such as the well known “Smoke Machine” and Rui Da Silva’s mix of Kelli Ali’s “Kids”. Sander Kleinenberg’s all time classic “My Lexicon” also got a work out from the very impressive Taylor. Next was the master, Anthony Pappa. Never has this man let me down and he wasn’t going to start today. His mixing and technical ability is second to none. His ability to layer one record over another leaves many breathless, which is a reason why he is so highly respected in the UK especially. His Sundance appearance was brilliant. It was a more uplifting set then that of usual from Pappa, and it was a set befitting to the occasion, ending off with a tune that is firmly becoming a favourite in the progressive scene, Cosmos’ “Take Me With You”. The only disappointment of the set was the fact that it only went for 1 hour and half, which left me and I’m sure many more begging for an extra hour (or two). Below is a list of the fine records that Anthony Pappa pleased us with in the late evening of Easter Monday. Dino Lenny – “I Feel Stereo” (Mara Remix) Fingerfest – “Autoporno” (Remix) Subtech – “Subtech” Luke Slater – “Nothing At All” Tonedepth – “Rumblefish” (Dub) Lemon 8 – “New York, New York” Slacker – “Looky Thing” Sunscreem – “Perfect Motion” (WOW Mix) Head Affect – “Afrochrome” Evolution – “Walking On Fire” (Bedrock Mix) Cosmos – “Take Me With You” (Instrumental) Martyn Allen closed off proceedings and did so well. Surprised me by playing a classic in Grace’s “Not Over Yet” as well as finishing off with Faithless “Insomnia” that left a smile on many faces as they left Greenwood.
