Autumn Breaks featuring Cut La Roc & Lavelle

  • The Fuzzy name has become synonymous with the words “F***in Awesome”, which usually get said after every event they put on. Recent successes have included Moonlight Sounds, the Scratch Perverts and New Years Day’s unforgettable Field Day, however it always seems to be the Fuzzy Breaks events which are put on every season that seem to attract the most hype from breakbeat’s loyal followers. Autumn Breaks once again returns to the Metro, the last one being Spring Breaks with Lee Coombs held at Bohem. The Easter long weekend saw a lot of people wanting to get their groove on, so what did the Easter bunny have in store for them? A couple of phat, funky and chunky Easter eggs in the form of Cut La Roc and James Lavelle. He should also take a bit more care with these eggs as they were breaking. Due to the cancellation of Deep City, Fuzzy were able to secure James Lavelle for a 4 hour set in the Roma room. Good work! It would have been embarrassing to have a huge international act arrive in Sydney with nowhere to play and Autumn Break suits Lavelle’s playing style to a T. His last visit here was to an almost empty breaks room at Gatecrasher so a Roma room filled with breakbeat junkies was an awesome salute to a man who has changed our outlook on dance music with some great releases on his Mo’wax label. His set comprised of tracks from his recent Fabriclive CD, which a lot of people described as being wicked, and more to stretch into a 4 hour set. You could hear the cheers when he dropped Rare Earth’s Get Ready and the Plump DJ’s remix of Orbital’s Funny Break all with footage of space, planets and asteroids playing in the backdrop. Funk, Tech, Nu Skool, Tribal breaks and Hip-hop in the Roma room - a great way to start the Easter holiday! The main room was where the party’s at. Q45 never being one to disappoint with a fine selection of breaks and 2-step tracks to get the dancefloor shaking. He definitely knows how to drop his tracks properly and the crowd knows how to react especially by clapping to the beat during Antidote by the Stanton Warriors. A 2-step remix Afroman’s “Because I Got High” tore up the dancefloor – the song could not have been produced any better. Kid Kenobi followed afterwards with all the happenings from the techier side of breaks. Both DJ’s playing great sets showing that the locals can do it just as good, and maybe better, than the internationals. As KK played the last track of his set, Speed, Azzido Da Bass’ newie, the man we all came to see stepped up to take his turn on the decks. Cut La Roc, AKA Lee Potter, no direct relation to Harry Potter, yet he was able to conjure up some wizardry on the turntables. Kid Kenobi had never even finished his set and La Roc was there slicing and dicing it up on Speed as a prelude to what Fuzzy attendees were going to be treated to for the next two and a half hours. So what were they in for you ask? Breakbeat anthems! Every single breaks track that made an impact on the genre/scene was served up Cut La Roc style. Criminal Element Orchestra’s Put The Needle On The Record and Now Is The Time by the Freestyler’s both melded together well with some fine scratching to boot. Did it stop there? No! Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Crystal Method and even the Propellerheads got thrown into the blender, the latter causing some breakdance mayhem on the dancefloor. As always, Plump DJ’s Scram gets thrown into the mix to the delight of everyone on the dancefloor, prompting the crowd to cheer and whistle. Surprisingly enough, their Big Groovy Fucker, dropped much later on in the set, did not herald the same attention when it almost certainly could be the Scram for 2002. Fuzzy yet again exceed our expectations and put on an awesome event. At the end of it you could hear the words “F***in’ Awesome” being spoken by many people as they made their way out of the Metro. Hopefully one day, Sydney City Council can allow it to stay open again until 6am. But more importantly, one thing’s for sure, the Sydney breaks massive are anxious to see who comes in for Winter Breaks.
