Andy Page @ Chinese Laundry, Sydney

  • The Chinese Laundry has always been a personal favourite of mine. The venue has a somewhat eerie underground feel to it, with the cave, as the name suggests, giving you a feeling that you are safely tucked away from the outer world. Now when you are secluded like this, there is not a better music maker then Andy Page to have providing the entertainment. Before Andy got on however, Ben Korbel was doing his thing and doing it very well as usual. I had not seen Ben play for quite a while actually and he was playing some very good stuff. It was pretty chunky in parts, and also quite melodic which is always nice on a cold and wet Saturday night. When Ben finished the focus turned 5 meters to our right where Andy had his live setup all ready to go. Now I heard that Andy would have a live Guitar present but I didn’t expect him to be at the controls. He is known as an utter freak when it comes to working the controls of a PC, but I was quite shocked to see that this wasn’t enough leaving him also tweaking the sound with his Guitar. It’s all good and well to have him doing all these things at once, but what counted was the end result, and I must say that the end result was very very tasty. The baselines were pretty much constant, a definite good thing when you have the closed sound system of the Cave, and the tracks that came out of Andy’s hard drive were quite simply top class. Intricate, funky and down right dirty was the order of his live set, and I couldn’t have been more pleased with Andy’s set. It was finally good to have Andy playing in Sydney, and with the new crew at the helm at the Laundry, I am sure we will continually see a host of good talent at a very good venue.
