Morgan Geist / Andreas Tilliander @ The Baltic Room/Seattle, USA

  • The great thing about going out on a weeknight in Seattle is that you know that the people who are present are there because they love music. No one's there to hook up. No one's there to get wasted. No one's there to fill out the scene. So even though the crowd tonight was a little sparse, that didn't stop the artists from throwing down some great music. Andreas Tilliander, the Swedish producer most known for his forays into clicks&cuts has broadened his musical repertoire to include future-disco. Tonight his set was loose and nimble with what some might consider cheesy vocals, but I consider sweet, setting the stage nicely for Morgan Geist. Geist continued the future-disco sound. His set was exactly what I had expected but still somewhat surprising; hand claps syncopating the rhythm while muted cow bells emphasized melodies. Not all of his tracks were "future-disco" with at least a couple, dig-deep-in-your-crate rarities getting the floor groovin'. While I totally loved the beginning of his set, the ending is still where my head is, even now; deconstructed house just the way I like it -- with synth pads that crumble then reconstruct to bite you in the ass. When the ugly lights came on, I don't think one person in the club wanted to go home, but we did. Hell, it was a Tuesday, and I had to be awake for work in three and a half hours.
