Desyn Masiello @ Sweetchilli, Sydney

  • Desyn Masiello was finally back in Sydney, and even though he was here earlier this year, it’s always good to have the experience to listen to one of the finer DJ’s there is going around. His set in February this year left a very good taste on all those who have heard it, so you can excuse the anticipation that this upcoming 5 hour set was generating. Needless to say, and it seems that I will probably indulge in the broken record syndrome, but Robbie Lowe again demonstrated why he is without doubt one of Sydney’s finest and most consistent DJ by putting out another top draw set. It is easy to see why he is integral in the guaranteed success of a Sweetchilli night. As Robbie drew to a close the room was nicely filled and the heat (literally) rose as Desyn slowly got into his groove from just after midnight. His set began with some very tasty smooth house, delicately building his way into the set as well as occasionally throwing down some big tunes like the Pearson mix of ‘Manilla’. His set for me was noticeably a bit tougher then his set earlier this year, and throughout the 4-5 hours the basslines he played were relentless. It really was fantastic to hear some of the tunes he was belting out, which not included a couple from his Balance mix like Joey Negro’s ‘Make a Move On Me’ as well as the Original and a cracking remix of Chris Lake’s ‘Piano Tool’, but it was the new stuff he brought to the table such as a driving remix of ‘Chase the Sun’ and all that dirty techy goodness towards the latter parts of his set. The flow was solid throughout, made even more impressive due to the fact that he probably had to deal with more fans during his set then mix records!! I must say that the atmosphere at Candy’s was quite good – there really seemed to be a bit of a party feel, most likely helped to the upbeat style of house Desyn poured out. IT seems as though Sweetchilli may have found a good home in the venue, which is good news with the likes of Phil K, Kasey Taylor and Luke Chable all set to play there over the summer.
