Sasha, Melbourne

  • Sasha is a name that’s synonymous with progressive house, being at the frontier of the genre way back in the early 90s. However, my past experiences with sets from the man himself were a touch and go affair, with the night either being very good, or horrendously boring. It was with an apprehensive mindset that I walked into QBH, which a month earlier had seen the club packed to capacity with people hanging from the rafters for John Digweed’s gig. This time though, I was surprised to see that not that many people turned up for Sasha’s gig, with the upper level of the club closed. This didn’t really matter for me anyway, as it meant there was more room to move around. Luke Chable was warming up with a rather mediocre set which I didn’t really get into. Sasha took over at 1.30am, and this was the turning point of the night for me. He seemed to have traded in his laptop for an iMac instead, with a huge monitor in front of him. I suppose the more important thing for me wasn’t the kind of media he was playing from, but how it sounded, and boy did it sound good! He was back on form, playing a wicked progressive house set for the next 4 hours. It wasn’t just the thumping tracks that made the night, but the way the different layered sounds and tracks were thrown in together. Even a dub of Madonna’s new single “Hung” was added into the middle of his set. I must say, it’s been a while since I had that much fun dancing to good music in a club, if only time didn’t pass by that fast as it always does when you’re having fun.
