Moving Through Air Special

  • When this irregular club night is promoted as being 'melodic funky drum and bass', what they mean is they play NO jungle. Which in my opinion is a good thing. It's hour after hour of highly melodic, danceable ultra fast drum and bass. If you even remotely like the rhythmic style, you can't help but dance your arse off. I arrived at 11:30, and faced a lengthy 20 minutes queue to get in. Whoever said drum and bass is dead is wrong - at least 500 punters packed out this obscure Wynyard suit bar - and being the Queens Birthday Long weekend, it was HUUUGE. I arrived in time to catch most of Shueys set (clad in stripey jumper) - and he kept it light, upbeat and enjoyable. Next up was Ritual, who got things a bit darker while finally Vader jazzed things up a bit, keeping energy levels high. I left at four - and the place was still jumping. In terms of the crowd, there were lots of interstate people (it seems drum and bass is still the big thing in Brisbane and Perth) But all in all a great, diverse crowd there 'for the music'. Some people would like to see Moving Through Air become a weekly event - but it's very successful in its current sporadic incarnation. More people come, plan ahead and have a ball. Sure - it was better when it was $5 and Matt and Kayla were playing - but at $10 it's still a Sydney bargain. One of the only best value, most fun, semi-regular club nights in Sydney. Great projected visuals by Sopp too. Videos of slot cars, train sets and playground equipment all looped in time to the fast paced music. Only low point is the low roof which makes seeing the DJs and visuals a bit hard from up the back - especially if you're a short arse like me. Because drum and bass has become a niche in Sydney the fans come out in force and dig it even more. If Moving Through Air gets any bigger it will soon have to be on at the Metro.
