Lucien Foort

  • Lucien Foort’s second Melbourne gig only had a week to be publicised, but the gang at Room must’ve done something right, because the place was jumping from the moment I walked in. The side room was packed with punters listening to house, but it was to the main room where the crowd was going nuts to Sean Quinn. Quinn entertained with an interesting set that was largely anything but progressive. Instead, he threw a whole heap of variety into the mix with some well timed breaks and even electro. Very enjoyable stuff from a multi-talented DJ whose Friday night gig had been a breakbeat set at Seven. Lucien Foort took to the decks to mad applause in a singlet, which, notwithstanding the freezing temperatures outside, was an inspired choice of dress given the sweltering heat and smoke inside a jammed Room. The first half hour of his set was bouncy, interesting progressive, nice techy beats layered with occasional cheese-free melodies. Then the set changed its character, more standard percussive-oriented progressive making up the bulk of the ensuing two hours. Vocal tunes came and went, but the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the familiar Cosmos monster, ‘Take Me With You’. The crowd screamed and clapped along with the track, as did Lucien, who was pumping up the crowd all night. For his final half hour the set became noticeably more livelier, a more thumping bassline invigorating a still packed dancefloor. People from all corners of the dance spectrum had come to hear Foort play. Mohawks mixed with raver spikes, adidas jackets mixed with collared shirts, talcum powder mixed with stilettos, but everyone rocked to the same progressive beat. Foort has been a fairly frequent visitor to our shores of late – progressive fans can’t get enough of him!
