In Flagranti – Wronger Than Anyone Else

  • You might remember Switzerland’s own In Flagranti's ‘Just Gazing’ gracing Ivan Smagghe’s seminal ‘How To Kill the DJ’ mix from a few years ago. It was dark, mysterious, bass-heavy, even languorous stuff Headman would still be proud of today. Then, on last year’s ‘Bang Bang’, they entered full-on Italo-disco mode (with a fitting Ajello remix), while vaguely impersonating !!! shortly after on ‘We Make Love in a House Made of Glass’. Needless to say, In Flagranti are a hard act to follow. Now they've established themselves in NYC and are releasing ‘Wronger Than Anyone Else’, their first album. The collage effect of the full-length – all the songs are tied up to one another, never leaving any time for the listeners to catch their breath – is a bit unsettling at first, although it does make sense after a while, in a let’s-listen-to-The-Rapture-high-on-methamphetamines kinda way. Highlights are the aforementioned ‘Bang Bang’ and single ‘Genital Blue Room’ (err, what?), all hyped-up and dancey numbers, and the Chic-lite of ‘Uncanny Hinting’ and ‘Escapade’ that close the album. That said, you can’t help but feel theses pieces of angular disco-punk basslines we love have all been done recently already, and to greater effect. Not that In Flagranti are wronger, but this, unfortunately, sure feels later than anyone else.
