Rocco - Roots 4 Acid

  • London house imprint Buzzin Fly is run by Ben Watt, who mixed this year’s ‘Buzzin Fly Volume 3’, which is a good place for an overview of what’s been happening on the label of late. DJ Rocco appears on the comp as part of Rodamaal with the huge ‘Insomnia’, and now ‘Roots 4 Acid’ is his first solo release on the label. The original mix has been in the bags of a few big names since last Christmas – Digweed even had its release delayed by six months in order for him to have it exclusively on his 'Transitions' mix. This gets a-plodding pretty quickly with some nice string snippets and synth action, but it does tend to isolate itself in the prog bracket a little too much (which may explain Digweed’s excitement over it). This is quite similar in structure to Jamez' 'Testpilot' on Future Groove from a couple of years back. Moving to the flip, Lars Sandberg, once devoid of funk, quashes that myth with a real ass-shakin' piece of forward thinking house music. His recent 'Blood' release on Urbantorque already gave a hint of what his deeper Francois Dubois alter ego had to offer, and his trademark sprinkling of keys and slick techfunk vibes are on hand again here. This is the sort of track that I'd like to hear entering a club – it sets the mood for some serious groovin'. Buzzin Fly supply two opposing house designs on this release which keep up their consistently good form. If you're more a Bob the Builder type of DJ then the original should get your progger juices flowing, but I prefer the less predictable Dubois offering, which will appeal more to those who like to shake their money makers.
