The Glimmers - Kobe's In Columbia

  • This is the fourth in the series of Diskimo vinyls, which are all from The Glimmers and all rather good. Each has its own appeal, but they all share the same deranged bugged out kind of charm. Most importantly, they all have a good groove and a distinct and recognisable sound. In this fourth installment, we have two tracks. 'Kobe's in Colour' is menacing tech house that builds multiple layers of percussion and brooding synth lines into a hyperactive finale. The choice of sounds for the drums is great and resembles a mad night in some reeds: electronic insects click, synthesised frogs mate and weird EQed birds sing to each other. By the time a furious drummer is added to the menagerie it really gets going – only to suddenly finish as it's getting fucked up and fantastic. 'Wanna Make Out' (Optimo Espacio Dub) initially sounds like one of Maurice Fulton's dirty guitar-heavy Tirk releases but then suddenly changes to something far less abrasive and not too dissimilar to The Glimmers' recent Roxy Music remix. The two elements then come together so you have shoulder-waggling vocals and punk funk guitars, with fist punching grimeness in the bass. The result sounds like Blondie, via the prism of Optimo and The Glimmers circa 2007. This record is definitely worth a listen. If you've given it a spin and you're thinking: 'Well, I like it but I've only got a tenner to buy records this week', then give the other Diskimo records a go. After that I'm sure you'll find a way to part with at least £5.99 of your money, for that be the price of these records.
