Inaqui Marin - El Diario de Frank Fontaine

  • If this is the evidence, the Spanish techno scene isn’t just about overpriced debauchery in Ibiza anymore. Barcelona’s Inaqui Marin returns to Galaktika Records after his impressive ‘How to Play Phantomly’ 12” on the label last year, this time delivering on the A-side an unusual blend of Atari-generated synth pop and EBM minimal, if you will. There are looped, corrosive snares, an aggressive bassline and distorted Nintendo sounds, as well as lysergic stabs that hint at old-school Chicago. It’s far from subtle stuff, but there’s a hedonistic groove to this that would go down very well at your average underground warehouse party. On the B-side, Galaktica boss Maurice Aymard pitches the track down to more minimal levels, anaesthetizing the original’s blaring synths and melodic frills in favour of smoother tech house. It’s softer and deeper, but it’s less bold: The blunt fervour of the original feels like a raver’s night out under the influence, while Aymad’s re-take would rather fit a steady walk along Las Ramblas. Almost ten releases old now, Galaktika are steadily making a name for themselves as a new European label to watch.
