Simon Flower - Send In The Clowns
Label / Moon Harbour Recordings
Cat # / MHR031
Released / July 2007
Style / Deep House, Techno
Rating / 3

Simon Flower is one of the few New Zealanders in the house music scene, and after a decent release on Curl Curl earlier this year, he now makes his debut on Leipzig label Moon Harbour, with ‘Send In The Clowns’.

The title track is a woozy acidic cut which is a little like something Moon Harbour's own Daniel Stefanik might do, with submerged bass and effects interrupted by melancholy chords. It's not a hugely interesting track, so it's lucky that Moon Harbour have drafted in the increasingly prolific 2000 and One for a remix. And fresh from an excellent re-working of Lazy Fat People on Perspectiv, the Detroit-channeling Dutchman doesn't disappoint. As is his style, he knocks the edges off the original and creates a groove that's rougher and more determined, placing the keys to the forefront of the mix and building the entire track around them to create an excellently raw house track.

Flower's own ‘Seyyes’ is a little cleverer than the title track, with skulking bass and bleak strings combining to make an ominous deep house sound that may be worth a spin for some, however it's difficult to escape the fact that the 2000 and One mix is the best track on this release by some distance.

Mon, 06 Aug 2007the 2001 track is a repetition of a concept of him I now have heard enough allready. yes it grooves and works well on the dancefloor, but it lacks originality. on the other hand the original has a groove I don't hear often and sort of gets a hold of your hips in an unbelievable way.
maybe i don't wanna be caught the easy way on the floor, and is this the kind of groove that gets me swinging like a madman; that could be just me wanting to hear original unexpected things. seyyes is also an... More
