Chloé - Suspended

  • Chloe continues her fine run of deep, dark minimal house on this quality EP that, like her recent 'Dysfunctional Family' mix with Ivan Smagghe, is a excursion into the sinister and eerie depths of dance music. 'Suspended' is also the first extract from her forthcoming album, 'The Waiting Room' and if this single is anything to judge by, it will be well worth checking out. The original of 'Suspended' begins with a mid-tempo 4/4 beat, a gently pulsing bassline and a deliciously precise hi-hat. Then the weirdness starts. First a noise that sounds like something between distant ghosts and a distorted fairground ride, then a horrible swarm of bees, which rears up and takes over from everything else to form the most rancid breakdown since Depth Charge's electronic fucking track on 'Lust'. All the oddness comes together in the end with additional layers of trippyness for a finale that's both anxious and ominous. The Broke remix is less disturbing and, for me, has less impact. The beats are more choppy than the original whilst the bass is less defined and cannons around in a fuzzier manner. The track chugs along pleasantly enough, but whilst the swelling noises do give it a certain menace, it doesn't measure up to the horribly delightful bees, ghosts and fairground rides of the original.
