Cosmic Metal Mother / Professor Genius - I Think... / Pegaso

  • If the Orb had embraced minimalism in the early '90s, 'Little Fluffy Clouds' might've sounded a lot like 'I Think...' Good thing, then, that the good Dr. Paterson couldn't stop adding things to the sonic stew: Cosmic Metal Mother, Professor Genius, the whole of Norway's soft rock edit crew, you're livelihoods are safe. Admittedly, there's a whole lot less (if you can believe it) to Cosmic and Genius' tracks here than even the simplest Terje mix. But that's the point. 'I Think...''s BPM's veer close to double digits, and the track takes its sweet time to unfurl its echoed arpeggios and lazy laser synths. 'Pegaso,' the Prof's contribution to this split 12, is slightly busier. It presents a Platonic ideal for instrumental Italo, complete with a de rigueur ray gun breakdown two-and-a-half minutes in. The remixes to each track – Nick Chacona for Cosmic, Silver & Kane for Genius – both amp up the originals. Chacona transforms the previously gliding 'I Think...' into a deep house monster, while Silver & Kane employ Liquid Liquid’s Sal Principato on live percussion and call it a 'Roma Mix.' It doesn't beat the original, but, then again, what would?
