- We all have to be very thankful to Pierre. He invented acid house and, less famously, wild pitch. Respect is due, etc.
So now that’s over with and the Detroit/Chicago purist axis are mollified, is this any good? Well, firstly and thankfully, Pierre goes old school here. The ‘Acid Flange’ mix does exactly what it says on the tin with a simple old school beat and twisty, undulating acid line. I always find the thing that distinguishes old school acid is that the 303 is funky and bouncy instead of that manic pew pew p-p-p-p-pewwwww screaming that people started using in the 90s. The result is something that pretty much could have been made in 1988, although with cleaner production and slightly more effects. Not as good as ‘Slam’ or ‘Got the Bug’ maybe but very playable.
The ‘Nu jack’ mix dials up the breakdowns and high hats a bit more and adds an a ‘Let me see your footwork’ chant, but it’s fairly disposable, lacking the rawness and simplicity of the original.
On the other hand the glitchy Lady Foursquare and Charles Bleu mix is a refreshingly modern take on the spirit of acid using choppy stuttered breakdowns to lead into the original loping 303 groove.
Overall this release is acid through and through and a nice return to form for one of house music’s earliest pioneers.
