Matt Flores - Our Secret Garden

  • Matt Flores is, what they call in the biz, a survivor. Hardcore jungle, garage, 2-step, dub, Flores has weathered it all and come out on the other side with an excellent 12-inch that reflects his (and probably your) current interest in deep house. 'Our Secret Garden' puts a nice enough spin on the genre, however, that you won't find yourself muttering "cash-in" to yourself. It's guided by Efdemin bells, a lightly funky bassline, and eventually a looped guitar riff that looks a lot like Studio's Balearic vacation spots. Unlike Studio, however, Flores apparently has somewhere to be and the smooth, eloquent ride is over in a little more than seven minutes. Flip it over and you're confronted with 'Sleepwalk Ensemble,' which traffics in the Dixonian side of the deep house revival. Slowed down a tiny bit for maximum riff memorability, 'Sleepwalk…' lays down a nice bed of inevitability throughout its length until the track's string-aided melody crashes in. It's anthem time and, much like Wahoo's mix of Will Saul's 'Mbira,' that means it's also time to turn your brain off. Don't mind if I do...
