Satoshi Tomiie - Solar Wind

  • Apart from a forgettable collab with Audiofly early in 2007 as Opus Ink, it was a quiet year for Satoshi Tomiie. His label SAW, however, churned out a few decent 12”s, namely those from Guy Gerber and Jim Rivers. Even so, this one is SAW’s best for a long time. After kicking around in the cases of Cattaneo and Digweed as a CDR, Satoshi Tomiie’s ‘Solar Wind’ finally gets a digital release, and not a moment too soon, Tomiie-san. The original mix is a slab of pure hands-in-the-air progressive house. It gains momentum slowly on fluttery metallic melodies and some very Tomiie-esque funky-bass interludes before hitting its straps on a flanged epicness that rises and lifts, and then lifts some more, until you feel like you want to beat up Carl Weathers and yell out "Adrian". DJ Yellow’s remix sees the Frenchman lighten the mood with playful breakbeat drums and some softer, filtered synths. Even the clichéd (and slightly irritating) female vocal in the breakdown can be ignored, because the main melody is so laden with glee that you can’t help but feel all tingly inside. Lastly, Luca Bacchetti adds a techy minimal flavour in his revision. Dark and heavy with a real small-club sentimentality to it, this mix is mostly bassline and raindrop bleeps, but it has an amazing energy. Definitely a back-room stormer. Is there a progressive house rebirth on our hands? Already? Well, I have my reservations, but this, at least, is progressive done well, and the remixes are both great, so what more can you ask for?
